Information and preference reversals in lotteries

چکیده

Several approaches have been proposed for evaluating information in expected utility theory. Among the most popular approaches are the expected utility increase, the selling price and the buying price. While the expected utility increase and the selling price always agree in ranking information alternatives, Hazen and Sounderpandian [11] have demonstrated that the buying price may not always agree with the other two. That is, in some cases, where the expected utility increase would value information A more highly than information B, the buying price may reverse these preferences. In this paper, we discuss the conditions under which all these approaches agree in a generic decision environment where the decision maker may choose to acquire arbitrary information bundles. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Moderation of Preference Reversals in the Long Run

This study explored how preference reversals, induced by changes in response mode (choice vs. pricing), are moderated by how lotteries are represented, as being played 1, 10, or 100 times. Ss chose which of a pair of gambles they preferred to play and determined the minimum selling price of each gamble. Replicating previous research, the preference reversal was obtained for single-play represen...

Options as information: rational reversals of evaluation and preference.

This article develops a rational analysis of an important class of apparent preference reversals-joint-separate reversals traditionally explained by the evaluability hypothesis. The "options-as-information" model considers a hypothetical rational actor with limited knowledge about the market distribution of a stimulus attribute. The actor's evaluations are formed via a 2-stage process-an infere...

Salience and Asset Prices

In Bordalo, Gennaioli, and Shleifer (2012a)— henceforth, BGS (2012a)—we described a new approach to choice under risk that we called salience theory. In comparisons of risky lotteries, we argued, individuals’ attention is drawn to those payoffs which are most different or salient relative to the average. In making choices, individuals overweight these salient payoffs relative to their objective...

Response-induced Reversals of Preference in Gambling: an Extended Replication in Las Vegas

Previous experiments, studying college students in a laboratory setting, have demonstrated the effects of response mode upon information-processing strategies employed in gambling decisions. The present experiment extended, in a Las Vegas casino, the findings of the previous studies. As in the laboratory, the casino patrons were found to employ different strategies when choosing among pairs of ...

Preference reversals are diminished when gambles are presented as relative frequencies.

Preference reversals are a well-documented example of suboptimal decision making. Typical preference reversals experiments have involved monetary bets presented in probability format. Research on other examples of decision making have shown that irrational or suboptimal choices are diminished or eliminated entirely when the probabilities are presented as relative frequencies (e.g., Gigerenzer &...
